Parents holding their newborn baby outdoors in Sydney during a morning portrait session with soft bokeh background.

It is not often that I receive requests for outdoor newborn portraits, especially during the Australian winter. But on a warm winter morning at the end of July, I had the privilege of photographing the Morales family with their newborn baby girl at Sydney Olympic Park. The temperature was around 17 degrees, which allowed us to move through the poses quickly while keeping the baby warm in her pram between shots.

The leaves on the trees and plants still carried morning dew, which made them glisten as sunlight passed through. This moisture created the perfect conditions for bokeh, the soft glowing blur that appears in the background of photos. It is something I always look for during outdoor sessions by finding reflective surfaces in the background, such as the shiny leaves in this case.

The family portraits were backlit by positioning the main light source behind the subjects. This technique adds natural separation between the family and the background, giving the portraits depth and dimension. The combination of warm light, reflective leaves, and gentle interaction between the parents and their baby created a calm, heartfelt series of images that perfectly captured their first family moments together.

Family Poses with Baby

The first photos set the tone of the session. The hero portrait shows the parents leaning in close, foreheads touching while holding their daughter. This pose speaks to tenderness and closeness, capturing the joy of welcoming a firstborn.

We also created portraits where both parents held their baby together, either standing or seated, emphasising warmth and shared love. These photos form the heart of the collection and show the family as one.

Here are some moments from the session that capture the family’s warmth and connection under the soft morning light.

Parent and Baby Moments

After the family portraits, we moved into more intimate parent and child poses. The mother cradled her baby gently, creating soft and nurturing imagery. The father held his daughter with quiet strength, including moments where the baby rested on his shoulder.

These photos highlight the bond each parent has individually, creating a balance of tenderness and protection.

Understanding Bokeh and Morning Light

Bokeh is the soft, blurred quality that appears in the background of photos when light shines through reflective details. It often looks like glowing circles or gentle highlights, adding a dreamy atmosphere that makes the subject stand out.

In this session, the morning dew on the leaves created those reflections that transformed into bokeh when the sunlight passed through. I often look for reflective elements like this in the background since they add depth and atmosphere while keeping the family in focus.

To maintain soft and balanced lighting, I used an off-camera flash as fill light. This ensured that the baby’s face remained evenly lit without harsh shadows. Changing camera angles between eye level and slightly above added variety while keeping the focus on the family’s connection and emotion.

Morning vs Afternoon Sessions

The time of day makes a big difference in outdoor portraits. For families, the best light in the morning is within the first one to two hours after sunrise, when the sun is soft and flattering. Babies are often more settled during this time, which helps create relaxed and natural portraits. The morning light also produces ideal conditions for bokeh, as dew and moisture reflect the sunlight.

The afternoon is another great option, especially in the hour or two before sunset, when the sun sits lower in the sky. This light brings warm tones and long shadows that create a different, golden atmosphere in the photos. Both morning and afternoon avoid the harsh light of midday and provide natural conditions that elevate outdoor newborn photography.
