Before Your Portrait Session: How We Prepare
Once booked for a portrait photography session, we will send you samples of portrait photography poses to choose from, based on the online questionnaire you submitted. If you have booked a studio portrait session, this will help us determine the creative lighting needed to achieve the perfect portrait tailored to you and your loved ones.
For outdoor and environmental portraits, no worries. Our expert portrait photographer will guide you and your loved ones to the perfect location for any particular pose and capture images you will truly treasure.
Depending on the studio session you’ve booked, you may also have the option to choose between a variety of plain backdrop colours or themed studio backdrops. Each background creates a distinct mood:
Our backdrop options include:
Plain seamless backdrops in charcoal grey, light grey, black, or white
Themed backdrops like Summer Orchard, Grey Vintage Wall, Green Spring Flower, Dark Night Blue Gold Bokeh, and Dark Brick Wall
We’ll use your chosen backdrop as part of the lighting and style plan to ensure everything looks cohesive with your vision. See gallery below for examples of how the same subjects photographed against different backdrops can create entirely different tones and impressions. The gallery also includes examples of themed backdrops to help you visualise their effect on the overall mood.
During Your Portrait Session: What Happens on the Day
Our portrait photography sessions typically last about an hour. During that time, we usually capture 40 to 60 images across 8 to 12 styled poses. If you're hoping to include more pose variations or different groupings such as full family, individual portraits, or parent-child combinations, a longer session may be recommended. We'll help determine the best session length for your needs when you book.
For outdoor sessions, we’ll guide you and your loved ones to a scenic location that suits your selected poses. These shoots are relaxed and intuitive, shaped by natural surroundings and candid interaction.
In the studio, we create a calm, welcoming atmosphere with soft background music to help everyone feel at ease. Our photographer provides gentle pose direction while giving you space to feel confident in front of the camera. You’ll also have access to a Live View Monitor so you can preview each image as it’s taken and make real-time adjustments to your pose or expression.
After Your Portrait Session: What Happens Next
Once the photography session is complete, the fun part begins. We will send you contact prints of the images taken during your session, from which you can make your selections. For a standard one-hour session, this usually includes eight (8) high-resolution images of your choice, professionally retouched and delivered as final images. If your session was longer or a different number of images was arranged, your final selection count may vary. And that’s it.
